The EVV100 Simple Effect Evaporator from Pignat is a bench-scale teaching unit for demonstrating continuous concentration by evaporation under vacuum in chemical engineering programs. The glass-built pilot feeds a stored solution continuously into the evaporator, heats it to its boiling point, and delivers a vapour and liquid mixture into a cyclone where the two phases separate. The concentrate is partly recirculated to the evaporator inlet while the balance drains to a receiver, and the vapour phase is condensed and collected, giving students a complete and visible view of the process.
The unit is built around a glass shell evaporator with a DN25 calandre and an internal stainless steel heating candle, providing roughly 60 cm of evaporation height and a 0.03 m2 surface area. A 2 kW thermostatic oil bath supplies heat across a 20 to 150 C range, while a PTFE diaphragm vacuum pump rated at 30 L/min and 160 mbar absolute drives evaporation under reduced pressure. Integrated instrumentation, including four digital thermometers, two flowmeters and a vacuum gauge, lets students control and vary working pressure, feed flow rate and initial concentration to build accurate mass and thermal balances.
The transparent glass design reveals boiling, the climbing phenomenon, cyclone operation and the changing appearance of the phases as concentration evolves, all within a low-footprint frame that keeps product and energy consumption to a minimum.
