Hardness Testing

Hardness is a characteristic of a material, not a fundamental physical property. It is defined as the resistance to indentation, and it is determined by measuring the permanent depth of the indentation. When using a fixed force (load) and a given indenter, the smaller the indentation, the harder the material. Indentation hardness value is obtained by measuring the depth or the area of the indentation using one of over 12 different test methods.

The Rockwell hardness testing method is used on all metals, except in condition where the test metal structure or surface conditions would introduce too much variations; where the indentations would be too large for the application; or where the sample size or sample shape prohibits its use. The Rockwell method measures the permanent depth of indentation produced by a force/load on an indenter

The Brinell hardness test method applies a predetermined test load (F) to a carbide ball of fixed diameter (D) which is held for a predetermined time period and then removed. The resulting impression is measured across at least two diameters – usually at right angles to each other and these result averaged (d). A chart is then used to convert the averaged diameter measurement to a Brinell hardness number. Test forces range from approx. 5-30KN.

The Vickers method is based on an optical measurement system. The microhardness test procedure, ASTM E-384, specifies a range of light loads using a diamond indenter to make an indentation which is measured and converted to a hardness value. Also referred to as a microhardness test method, Vickers Testing is mostly used for small parts, thin sections, or case depth work.

The MT91 System starts with a MT91 microhardness tester with video camera, combined with our C.A.M.S.® Computer Assisted Measurement System software, a personal computer and a motorized X-Y axis positioning table MT91 Series Rockwell Microhardness Testers
Versitron This hardness testing machine is ideal for applications ranging from high volume to sampling, from production floor harsh environments to the lab and from testing awkward shaped parts to precise small part testing applications Versitron Rockwell Testers
Brinell Hardness Testers
KB Series The KB Seriesis available with load measurementsystems of 1000 kgf and 3000 kgf with variationsfor extended rams or with a chain adapter. The chain adapter is 4 ft in length and is used for large cylinder samples. It secures onto the test head and wraps around the specimen holding the specimen securely during the test procedure. The test head may also be supplied with an extended ram length. The extended length is ideal for recessed areas or over raised edges. Other options include a reverse direction load adapter used for measuring inside diameters on pipe, tube, etc. KB Series Manual Tester
Pin Brinell A unique portable hardness tester that employs a precision shear pin to ensure correct manual loading against the sample. It is easy to use, economical and proven. A wide range of hardness can be checked from HB100 to 700. HB100 to 450 Brinell can be checked using the standard indenter. A tungsten carbide indenter is used when the Brinell measurement is from 300 to 700. Two Pin Brinell kits are available. The CPST Kit comes with a clamping vise for static testing including large flat, small flat and vee anvils Portable Hardness Tester
Microhardness Testers
HMV-G Series The HMV-G testers feature a truly unique design based around its “G” style frame from which the tester gets its name. Featuring a 100 mm vertical capacity and unlimited capacity on both the X & Y axis, a fully motorized turret to switch between indenter and objective positions, together with a load range from 10 to 2000 grams and fully automatic load change standard, are just a few of the great features of the HMV-G Microhardness Testers
Brinell Optical Systems
B.O.S.S Optical Scope The B.O.S.S. system can be added to any Brinell hardness tester; even our Newage Pin Brinell product. The system is comprised of a precision optical scan head, connected via a USB cable to a personal computer with the B.O.S.S. software installed. The software is used to select the primary hardness scale you are testing to. In addition, you have provisions to perform automatic hardness scale conversion The B.O.S.S. System
Highlight Optical Scope An optical scope featuring a high intensity LED light source providing excellent contrast for measuring your Brinell impressions 5620 Series
Pocket Brinell Scope The model 35-450 is a compact, portable reader with a fixed 20X focus. Its illumination system uses an incandescent flashlight for lillumination. The flashlight is powered with a single AAA battery, included with the instrument. The reticle is calibrated in 0.1mm units over a range of 6mm. The field of vision is 7mm 35-450 Series
